It’s interesting how often Western churches describe Jesus as gentle, basically inoffensive. The idea he had other sides, including the ability to get angry and shock people, doesn’t come up very often.
Yet you could argue it’s vital we talk about that side of Jesus, because until we do so we’re missing the fully story (and glory) of who he was.
Tim Harlow touches on some of those ideas in What Made Jesus Mad? Rediscover the Blunt, Sarcastic, Passionate Savior of the Bible:
Essentially, Harlow argues that if we know what angered Jesus, what he chose to critique, we gain a better understanding of what’s close to God’s heart as well as what attitudes we need to avoid.
Well worth the read.
